Russia Warns NATO Against Kaliningrad Blockade

(MENAFN) Russia warned Tuesday that any attempt by the UK or NATO to impose a blockade on the Kaliningrad Region could trigger a response involving all available means, including nuclear weapons.

The warning came in a statement from the Russian Embassy in London responding to UK media reports about a possible NATO blockade of Kaliningrad or moves to challenge Russian sovereignty over the territory.

“Those advocating plans to blockade Kaliningrad or launch a strike against it should have no illusions about the consequences. Any military action by the UK or NATO against Russian territory will be met with a response using all means available to Russia, including nuclear weapons,” it stressed.

The embassy also repeated that Russia “does not seek confrontation with NATO and Europe and does not intend to attack them,” while warning that countries that initiate such a conflict “should not be under any illusions” about Moscow’s response.

Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea located between Poland and Lithuania, with Lithuanian territory separating it from the rest of Russia.

The Russian Embassy in Paris also addressed the issue last week, describing as "provocative statements regarding the possibility of NATO forces striking the Kaliningrad region or blocking access to it."
