NISA Reports Major al-Shabaab Casualties in Middle Shabelle Raid

(MENAFN) Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), working with international partners, conducted coordinated security operations in the Middle Shabelle region that resulted in the killing of more than 33 al-Shabaab militants, according to a statement released Tuesday.

The agency said multiple militant hideouts were destroyed during the operation, including a site believed to be housing senior members of the group.

Officials said the targeted location was being used by commanders who were actively organizing fighters and preparing attacks at the time of the strike.

“Vehicles used for transporting and mobilizing fighters were burned, effectively dismantling their logistical network,” the statement said.

NISA also said intelligence indicated that around 90 militants had gathered in the area with the intention of planning activities that posed a threat to national security.

“The planned actions significantly weakened the extremists’ capacity and neutralized their imminent threat,” it added.

Al-Shabaab has been waging an insurgency against Somalia’s government for more than 16 years, carrying out repeated attacks on security forces, officials, and civilians.

Since July last year, Somali security forces, supported by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia and other partners, have stepped up operations against the group as part of broader efforts to strengthen national stability.
