UN Chief Raises Alarm Over Civilian Deaths

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed serious concern over the increasing civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure resulting from ongoing military operations in the Middle East, according to his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

Speaking on Monday, Dujarric emphasized the need to safeguard civilians and critical infrastructure “at all times.” He highlighted that the expansion of hostilities into countries not initially involved—such as Gulf nations, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon—is particularly troubling.

Dujarric warned of the growing humanitarian risks in the region and reiterated Guterres’ call for de-escalation, an immediate halt to hostilities, and meaningful dialogue in accordance with the United Nations Charter. He also referenced the UN chief’s earlier caution that ongoing military actions could “ignite a chain of events that no one can control,” stressing that the situation leaves “zero room for miscalculation.”

The remarks come after a large-scale strike by the US and Israel against Iran, which reportedly killed several top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and other countries hosting US assets in the region.
