Cuba Identifies Suspects Tied to Foiled Armed Boat Infiltration
The Interior Ministry disclosed the incident in a post on X, the social media platform owned by the American company, stating: "Authorities have confirmed that the intercepted speedboat, registered in the State of Florida under number FL7726SH, was carrying 10 armed individuals who, according to preliminary statements by those detained, intended to carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes."
An earlier ministry statement revealed that the vessel had breached Cuban territorial waters before occupants opened fire on border guards, wounding one officer. The confrontation left four alleged attackers dead and six others injured.
Officials reported seizing a significant cache of weapons and equipment from the boat, including assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, body armor, telescopic sights, and camouflage uniforms.
Authorities named six individuals taken into custody: Amijail Sanchez Gonzalez, Leordan Enrique Cruz Gomez, Conrado Galindo Sariol, Jose Manuel Rodriguez Castello, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara, and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra. Among those killed, the ministry identified Michel Ortega Casanova, while three additional fatalities remain unidentified pending further investigation.
The Interior Ministry asserted that all participants were Cuban nationals living in the United States, and claimed the majority had prior records tied to violent offenses. Officials further alleged that Sanchez Gonzalez and Cruz Gomez appear on Cuba's national terrorism watchlist under UN Security Council Resolution 1373, linked to suspected terrorist activity.
Separately, Cuban national Duniel Hernandez Santos was arrested inside the country on charges of coordinating the group's planned landing and reception. Authorities stated he had confessed to his involvement.
The Interior Ministry confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing.
