Macron Reinstates Sebastien Lecornu as Premier
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has restored Sebastien Lecornu to the position of prime minister just four days after accepting his resignation.
Lecornu initially stepped down on Monday, less than a month following his appointment.
A statement from the Elysee Palace on Friday revealed that he will now be tasked with forming a new government.
This development comes as a surprising twist after several days of intense political discussions aimed at breaking France’s ongoing parliamentary impasse.
On the social platform X, Lecornu expressed his commitment by stating, “I accept – out of duty – the mission entrusted to me by the President of the Republic to do everything possible to provide France with a budget by the end of the year and to address the daily life issues of our fellow citizens.”
He further emphasized the urgency to resolve the political turmoil by adding, “We must put an end to this political crisis that exasperates the French people and to this instability that is harmful to France’s image and its interests.”
Having taken office just a month ago, Lecornu has been under increasing pressure recently as he struggled to pass a budget in a deeply fractured French Parliament while also confronting a deteriorating debt situation.
Lecornu’s resignation followed criticism of his proposed ministerial lineup, which faced backlash from both right and left factions.
Critics accused the list of containing too many familiar faces from the previous government led by former Prime Minister Francois Bayrou.
The decision to reappoint Lecornu ignited immediate and strong reactions throughout France’s political landscape.
Jordan Bardella, leader of the right-wing National Rally party, condemned the move as “a bad joke and a humiliation for the French people.”
