Swedish, Norwegian Media Ready to Dispatch Reporters to Gaza
Editors and top executives from Sweden’s Sveriges Radio (SR), Expressen, Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), Aftonbladet, SVT, and Norway’s Verdens Gang (VG) told a broadcaster they stand prepared to dispatch reporters to cover the escalating conflict.
“We want to document the consequences of the acts of war, the hunger, and the situation of the civilians affected by the war,” wrote Eva-Therese Grottum, head of VG’s news department, in an email.
Daniel Kederstedt, SVT’s foreign news editor and acting responsible publisher, emphasized the importance of bearing witness to daily life amidst the conflict, calling it a "central part" of their mission.
Expressen’s editor-in-chief, Klas Granstrom, echoed the urgency: “We want to tell as much as possible about the situation in Gaza.”
However, Sveriges Radio, SVT, Svenska Dagbladet, and Verdens Gang stressed that the safety of their teams remains a top priority before any deployment.
The Gaza Media Office reported that the death toll among journalists has climbed to 238 since Israel’s war on Gaza began in late 2023.
Israel continues to face mounting international condemnation for what critics describe as a genocidal campaign in Gaza, where nearly 61,600 people have been killed since October 2023.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel confronts a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice over its ongoing military actions in the enclave.
