Strong heatwave in Europe leads to wildfires
Experts link the extreme conditions to climate change. “Thanks to climate change, we now live in a significantly warmer world,” said Akshay Deoras, a research scientist at the University of Reading’s meteorology department, adding that “many still underestimate the danger.”
In Spain, a worker at an equestrian center suffered severe burns and later died in hospital as flames driven by winds of up to 70 kilometres per hour swept through Tres Cantos, a suburb north of Madrid. Spanish media reported that he became trapped while attempting to save horses. The blaze forced hundreds of residents to flee, and although it was contained by Tuesday morning, it caused damage to several homes and primarily agricultural facilities, officials said.
Montenegro also reported a fatality when a soldier died and another was seriously injured after their water tanker overturned while combating wildfires north of Podgorica. In Italy, a child succumbed to heatstroke on Monday.
