Le Pen Criticizes EU, US Trade Deal
(MENAFN) Marine Le Pen, a veteran right-wing politician from France, has strongly criticized the newly finalized EU-US trade agreement, calling it an economic and political “fiasco” that undermines the European Union's sovereignty.
The agreement, which was concluded on Sunday between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump, was seen as a move to prevent an escalating trade war between Washington and Brussels.
Under its terms, the EU will commit to increasing its imports of US energy and military equipment.
In return, the United States will reduce its proposed 30% tariffs to a flat 15% on most European exports.
Le Pen, a prominent member of France's National Rally party and a leading opposition figure in the National Assembly, strongly condemned the deal.
She labeled it “a political, economic and moral fiasco” for the European Union.
According to her, the EU, with its 27 member states, ended up securing worse conditions than the United Kingdom, which had agreed to a 10% tariff – a deal widely criticized as unfavorable.
In her remarks, Le Pen accused Brussels of accepting unbalanced terms regarding the export of American gas and weapons, which, she argued, no patriotic French government would have agreed to.
She described the deal as “an outright surrender for French industry and for our energy and military sovereignty.”
Additionally, Le Pen argued that the agreement sacrificed the interests of French farmers to favor Germany’s automotive industry.
She specifically pointed to “clauses forcing us to further open the single market to American agricultural products in exchange for reduced taxes on German automobile exports.”
