Thailand, Cambodia Clash Amid Ceasefire Calls

(MENAFN) The ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has now entered its third consecutive day, marked by renewed airstrikes that have further increased the death toll along the contested border region.

This escalation persists despite international calls urging both sides to halt hostilities and initiate peace talks.

Thai combat aircraft targeted military installations in the Phu Ma Kua region as well as the Ta Muen Thom temple area, according to a Thai news organization.

In response, Cambodia confirmed the air raids and reported launching retaliatory strikes of their own, as stated by a Cambodian daily.

Additionally, Cambodia has shut down its airspace over zones currently affected by the conflict.

Earlier, the Thai Navy deployed four ships to provide support for their ground troops engaged in the clashes.

Thai forces claimed to have seized control of a strategic hilltop approximately 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) from the Preah Vihear temple on Saturday morning.

Despite multiple international efforts encouraging a ceasefire and diplomatic dialogue, fighting between the two neighboring Southeast Asian countries has persisted.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his commitment on Saturday to broker peace talks and end the hostilities.

The previous day, Anwar announced that both parties had “agreed” to a ceasefire following discussions with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia.

However, the ground situation has continued to deteriorate, underscoring the challenges in achieving a lasting resolution.
