Republic of Congo Voices Alarm on Cholera Outbreak
In a statement released Friday, Ibara reported that the National Public Health Laboratory analyzed three samples from the affected area, with two testing positive for Vibrio cholerae O1, Ogawa serotype, definitively confirming the disease’s presence.
"In light of these results and in accordance with the international health regulations, the government of the Republic of the Congo hereby declares a cholera epidemic in the Mbamou Island health district of Brazzaville Department," Ibara declared.
To date, officials have recorded 103 suspected cholera cases, including 12 probable deaths linked to the outbreak, the minister confirmed.
Ibara pointed to a regional surge in cholera cases, especially in neighboring Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as a contributing factor. He urged the public to maintain strict hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing with soap and clean water, drinking only safe water, and avoiding raw or undercooked foods. Residents were also advised to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms develop.
Cholera, an acute intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, spreads primarily through contaminated water and food. It manifests with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and fever, and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
The Republic of the Congo last faced a major cholera outbreak in July 2023.
