Germany Renews Threat Against Russia

(MENAFN) Ukraine is expected to soon gain the ability to target locations within Russian borders, according to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who spoke on Wednesday.

This development heightens the possibility that Berlin may provide long-range armaments, which Moscow has cautioned could intensify the ongoing conflict.

In an interview, Wadephul refrained from specifying particular weaponry but seemed to allude to the Taurus missile—a long-range missile capable of striking targets as far as 500 kilometers away, including areas inside Russia.

He stated, “Ukraine will also have the means to strike back into Russian territory,” while adding, “However, we will not reveal to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin... which weapons systems we are providing to Ukraine.”

Wadephul further explained that he had been hesitant to express a clear stance on the Taurus issue due to the missile’s technical intricacies, which contributed to the delay in making a formal decision.

Moscow has consistently warned that supplying Taurus missiles would effectively make Germany a direct participant in the conflict.

Russian authorities have long condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing that these deliveries prolong the war and increase the danger of a wider confrontation.

Germany has so far resisted delivering the Taurus missile system to Kyiv.

The previous Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, repeatedly opposed the transfer, citing concerns over escalation risks.

His successor, Friedrich Merz, has noted that no definitive decision has been reached regarding the issue.
