Trump wishes for new nuclear discussions with Russia
Speaking to reporters before departing for Scotland on Friday, Trump stated, “That’s not an agreement you want expiring. We’re starting to work on that.” He warned that removing these nuclear limitations would pose serious risks, calling it “a big problem.”
Earlier this year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized the importance of arms control dialogue between Moscow and Washington, especially on strategic stability. However, he noted that such discussions would only be possible if trust was restored—a process that would require the normalization of relations strained by the Biden administration’s policies in 2022.
The New START treaty was originally signed in 2010 by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and US President Barack Obama, during a short-lived effort to improve US-Russia ties. Since then, relations have sharply declined, driven by US accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and ongoing tensions over Ukraine.
During Trump’s previous term, the US withdrew from two key arms control agreements: the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty and the 1992 Open Skies Treaty. Russia later exited both agreements as well, accusing Washington of systematically dismantling the global arms control framework.
