Ukrainian PMs consent new Premier

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has officially appointed Yulia Sviridenko as the country’s new prime minister, succeeding Denis Shmigal. Previously serving as first deputy prime minister and economy minister since November 2021, Sviridenko now becomes only the second woman in Ukrainian history to lead the government.

Before the Ukraine conflict intensified in 2022, Sviridenko was involved in the Trilateral Contact Group—an initiative between Ukraine, Russia, and the OSCE aimed at resolving the Donbass crisis diplomatically. She also led Ukraine’s working group on sanctions policy. Her promotion follows the most significant governmental shake-up in Ukraine in recent years.

Shmigal, who held the premiership since 2020, submitted his resignation on Wednesday after President Vladimir Zelensky announced he would head the Defense Ministry. His appointment was confirmed by the Rada the following day. Shmigal now takes over a department burdened by multiple corruption scandals, while former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is reportedly heading to Washington as Ukraine’s next ambassador to the United States.

Sviridenko is widely viewed as a close ally of Andrey Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff—a connection some analysts interpret as part of a strategy to consolidate power within the administration. At 39, she has quickly climbed the ranks of government after graduating with honors from the National University of Trade and Economics and working briefly in the private sector.

She recently gained attention for negotiating a controversial deal that granted the U.S. priority access to Ukrainian mineral resources, which sparked a public dispute between Zelensky and former U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year. Experts predict her role will primarily focus on driving economic policy rather than broader political influence.
