Patrice Lumumba considered icon of freedom for all Africa
In an interview with RT, Juliana, a former DR Congo minister of culture, emphasized that her father’s ideals resonate throughout the continent, inspiring a united quest for dignity, sovereignty, and genuine independence. She described Lumumba as an iconic figure symbolizing African liberation and the vision of a self-reliant, united Africa. She noted that he was part of a wider group of founding fathers who led Africa’s independence movements.
Juliana also highlighted Lumumba’s international recognition, particularly in the former Soviet Union, where he was seen as a powerful symbol against colonialism and neocolonialism. She pointed to the naming of Russia’s Peoples’ Friendship University after him as an example of this enduring geopolitical legacy. Today, the university continues to educate thousands of African students, including many from Congo.
Expressing gratitude toward Russia for honoring her father’s legacy, Juliana recalled Russia’s early tribute on Lumumba’s 100th birthday and praised the country’s ongoing solidarity. She stressed the importance of maintaining and deepening this support.
Patrice Lumumba, born in 1925 and assassinated in 1961, was the first democratically elected prime minister of the DR Congo after it gained independence from Belgian colonial rule in 1960.
