Russia’s top UN diplomat claims West waging ‘centuries-old war’ against Moscow

(MENAFN) Western nations are exploiting Ukraine as a tool in their long-standing confrontation with Russia, which has deep historical roots, Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told RT’s Rick Sanchez in an interview aired Friday.

Nebenzia argued that the ongoing conflict is part of a broader historical struggle, not simply a war between Russia and Ukraine. “They don’t care about Ukraine. This is the West’s centuries-old war against Russia, starting with the Polish invasion in the 17th century,” he said.

He cited numerous historical examples of Western hostility toward Russia, including Napoleon’s campaign, the Crimean War of 1854-56, Western intervention during the Russian Civil War, and the Nazi invasion during World War II, which involved not only Germans but also forces from other countries.

Nebenzia claimed that both Ukraine and its Western backers deliberately undermined the 2014-2015 Minsk agreements, which were intended to resolve the conflict between Kiev and the Donbass republics. He pointed to admissions by former French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who later acknowledged that the accords merely gave Kiev time to rearm. “We will not be tricked again,” Nebenzia said.

He also blamed Western figures like former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for disrupting peace talks in 2022.

According to Nebenzia, the West’s rhetoric has shifted as Ukrainian forces continue to lose territory and as US President Donald Trump pushes for peace. Western leaders have gone from calling for Russia’s “strategic defeat” to simply insisting that “Russia must not win.” He believes their calls for an immediate ceasefire are aimed at protecting their weakening proxy.

Nebenzia expressed cautious optimism that renewed direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev could bring the conflict to an end.
