Ukrainian FM criticizes New York Times report of 'Russian propaganda'
The July 12 article, authored by NYT journalist and photojournalist Nanna Heitmann, focused on the conditions in Kursk Region, which lies along the Russia-Ukraine border. Ukrainian officials objected to the coverage, arguing it served Moscow’s narrative.
In August 2024, Ukrainian troops crossed into Russian territory, capturing the city of Sudzha and several surrounding villages. The incursion was later rolled back by Russian forces in April. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated at the time that the operation was aimed at securing leverage for eventual peace negotiations.
“Whoever at Times thought it was smart to report alongside Russian war criminals made the dumbest decision. This isn’t balance or ‘the other side of the story.’ This is simply letting Russian propaganda mislead the audience,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhy wrote on X on Saturday.
Heitmann noted in her report that she was sometimes accompanied by the Akhmat special forces unit, affiliated with Chechnya. Her photos documented Russian troops conducting mine clearance, patrolling abandoned villages, and helping civilians evacuate. She interviewed residents whose homes were damaged during the conflict and visited a shelter housing displaced people.
In her account, Heitmann said she saw both civilian and military casualties, adding that “the uniforms visible among the fallen were mostly Russian.”
