South Korean Ex-Leader Faces Treason Probe
(MENAFN) A special investigative team in South Korea conducted a series of raids on Monday amid claims that ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol orchestrated a clandestine drone mission into North Korean territory.
The alleged goal was to incite a military backlash that could legitimize his imposition of martial law last December, according to local press.
The development points to a widening of the current insurrection probe against Yoon, now reportedly encompassing accusations of treason.
A news agency stated that authorities believe Yoon’s attempt to enforce martial law may have been supported by deliberate provocation.
A total of 24 sites were searched during the operation, including the country's Drone Operations Command (DOC), the Ministry of National Defense, and the Defense Counterintelligence Command.
These searches aimed to collect materials that might support the claims under investigation.
Raids were also carried out at the National Security Office, located within the presidential complex, and at the private residence of Maj. Gen. Kim Yong-dae, who commands the drone unit.
The special counsel suspects that Yoon gave instructions to the military to deploy drones towards Pyongyang in October of the previous year.
In addition, the investigation is examining suggestions that the military may have taken part in obscuring the details of the drone mission.
According to reports, investigators have acquired an audio recording in which a military official mentions that Yoon explicitly directed the drone unit to prepare for a cross-border mission into Pyongyang sometime between October and November — just weeks prior to his martial law declaration.
