Poll Shows Hungarians View Ukraine Nearly as Dangerous as Russia
The survey, which analyzed public opinion on major allies and perceived threats across different regions, shows that 33% of Hungarian respondents identified Russia as the most pressing danger, while 27% named Ukraine as the second-most significant threat.
Nepszava linked the findings to Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s continued condemnation of Kyiv amid its conflict with Moscow and his firm resistance to Ukraine joining the European Union. The paper emphasized that “Orban’s propaganda is effective.”
The poll also highlighted sharp divisions in threat perception based on political affiliation.
The newspaper reported: "Only 11 percent of Fidesz members consider Russia to be the main threat, while the same rate among non-Fidesz members is 52 percent."
Meanwhile, the perception of Ukraine as a threat also varied widely. According to the newspaper, 45% of those aligned with the ruling Fidesz party regard Ukraine as the primary threat, a stark contrast to just 14% among those who do not support Fidesz.
The survey also indicated widespread distrust toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with nearly 75% of Hungarians expressing a lack of confidence in him.
Despite the Orban administration’s often critical stance on the European Union, a majority of Hungarians still view the EU as the country's key ally—24% cited the EU as Hungary's main partner, with the United States following closely at 23%.
