Former Nigerian Leader Passes Away

(MENAFN) Former Nigerian head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away following an extended battle with illness, according to an official announcement by the nation's government.

Buhari, a retired military general, briefly governed Nigeria between 1984 and 1985 after seizing power in a military takeover.

He later returned to leadership as a democratically elected president, holding office for two terms from 2015 to 2023.

The 82-year-old died on Sunday afternoon in a London medical facility, according to a post on X by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

Current Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed his grief upon learning of Buhari’s death, stating that he received the news with “profound sorrow and a heavy heart.”

He also extended heartfelt sympathies to Buhari’s wife and other relatives.

“Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” Tinubu noted in his official message. He went on to applaud Buhari's “unwavering dedication” and “deep commitment to the unity and progress” of Nigeria.

According to Tinubu, “He stood firm through the most turbulent times... He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.”

In an additional announcement, the president revealed that Vice President Kashim Shettima has been instructed to travel to the United Kingdom to oversee the return of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria, where he will be honored with a state funeral.
