Firefighters Fatally Shot During Idaho Wildfire Response

(MENAFN) At least two firefighters were fatally shot Sunday by unidentified assailants while battling a wildfire near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, local authorities confirmed.

Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris revealed during a press conference that both victims were fire personnel, with the total number of injured yet to be determined. The firefighting efforts remain underway.

The attack unfolded around 1:30 p.m. local time (2030 GMT) after a brush fire ignited on Canfield Mountain. Roughly 30 minutes later, as crews arrived to contain the blaze, they were met with gunfire from unknown suspects concealed in the surrounding woods, according to law enforcement sources.

Sheriff Norris identified the weapons used as "modern-day sporting rifles."

Authorities continue an active search for those responsible. Norris emphasized that the situation remains volatile, with officers under fire from multiple points on the mountain.

"We still have civilians who are coming off that mountain. We might have civilians that are stuck or in shock on that mountain, so this is a very, very fresh situation," he said.

The exact number of shooters has not been confirmed. Norris warned that if the suspects are not apprehended quickly, "this is likely to be a multiday operation."
