Putin Vows Retaliation if Ukraine Deploys Nuclear Weapons Against Russia

(MENAFN) At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a severe warning to Ukraine, declaring that any deployment of nuclear weapons against Russia would mark Kyiv’s “last mistake.” Putin cautioned that if Ukraine attempted to detonate a so-called “dirty bomb” on Russian soil, Moscow would retaliate with an immediate “mirror response.”

Describing those in Ukraine as neo-Nazis, Putin stated, “This would be a colossal mistake by those we refer to as neo-Nazis operating in present-day Ukraine, perhaps their last.” He stressed that Russia’s nuclear doctrine mandates a forceful reaction to any existential threats, emphasizing dire consequences for Ukraine’s leadership and the country as a whole.

“Our response would be extremely harsh, most likely catastrophic, both for the neo-Nazi regime and for Ukraine itself,” Putin declared.

Despite these warnings, Putin admitted that Russia currently lacks any verified evidence of Ukraine preparing to use a dirty bomb. “Thank God, we have no proof of such intentions. But we operate under the assumption that such an idea might arise in someone’s sick mind,” he remarked.

In response to ongoing attacks on Russian territory and a recent infiltration in the Kursk region, Putin revealed Moscow’s plan to establish a “security zone” along the border with Ukraine. This buffer zone is expected to extend between 8 to 12 kilometers (5 to 7.5 miles). He also hinted at the possibility of seizing the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, a regional hub.

“The depth is about 10 to 12 kilometers, sometimes 8, sometimes 12. Beyond that lies the city of Sumy. Capturing it is not our task, but I don’t rule it out,” Putin said.

When questioned about Russia’s territorial ambitions in Ukraine, Putin emphasized the cultural and historical ties between the two peoples, asserting, “Where the foot of a Russian soldier steps – that is ours.” He described the Russian and Ukrainian peoples as one nation and claimed that “all of Ukraine is ours” in that sense.
