Immigration Raids Trigger Protests in Los Angeles

(MENAFN) For a third consecutive day, large numbers of protesters clashed with police in Los Angeles, as the Trump administration persisted with its controversial immigration raids across California.

Demonstrators gathered outside the federal building in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, calling for an immediate halt to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that were targeting workplaces in the state's largest city.

In an effort to disperse the crowd, police deployed tear gas to break up violent confrontations and arrested numerous individuals, according to reports.

Despite these measures, protesters remained resolute in their stance.

"Very strong community, and this is why we show up, and we're gonna keep showing up because, well, it is an obligation and a duty for each and every one of us to be here and fight against the oppression and these kidnappers," said Nabil Shukir in an interview with a news agency.

In response to the unrest, Leader Donald Trump authorized the deployment of 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Sunday.

The White House explained that the troops were being sent to "address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester" in the state.

However, California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly opposed the federal government's decision to send the National Guard.

"The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles—not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle," Newsom stated in a press release.
