U.S. Envoy Calls for Immediate Halt to Hostilities in Syria

(MENAFN) The U.S. Special Envoy to Syria on Sunday called on all factions involved in the Syrian conflict to bring an immediate end to hostilities and engage in a path toward peace.

"President (Donald) Trump’s decision to lift sanctions was a principled step, offering the Syrian people a chance to move beyond years of unimaginable suffering and atrocities,” Tom Barrack stated in a post on X.

He continued, "The international community has largely rallied behind the nascent Syrian government, watching with cautious optimism as it seeks to transition from a legacy of pain to a future of hope."

Fighting erupted on July 13 in Suwayda between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze militias. The clashes escalated rapidly, prompting Israeli airstrikes that targeted Syrian military installations and infrastructure around Damascus.

Barrack condemned the renewed violence, stating, “this fragile ambition is now overshadowed by profound shock, as brutal acts by warring factions on the ground undermine the government’s authority and disrupt any semblance of order."

He stressed that the onus of de-escalation falls on all sides—not just the Syrian government.
"All factions must immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities, and abandon cycles of tribal vengeance," he implored. "Syria stands at a critical juncture—peace and dialogue must prevail—and prevail now."

His remarks followed an announcement from the Syrian presidency on Saturday declaring a nationwide ceasefire aimed at ending the latest wave of bloodshed in Suwayda. The ceasefire comes on the heels of a separate truce recently brokered between Syria and Israel, also facilitated by Barrack.

Security forces have since been deployed to the volatile province, and authorities have confirmed that fighting has been paused.

The recent turmoil comes in the wake of major political change. After Bashar al-Assad’s removal from power in December 2024, a transitional government headed by Ahmed al-Sharaa took office in January.
