UK plans to reduce voting age to sixteen
This commitment to increase voter participation was initially introduced in Labour’s election manifesto and is now part of a broader set of reforms in the recently unveiled Elections Bill.
The official strategy emphasizes that “By engaging voters early, when they are young, and allowing them to have a say in shaping their future, we will build the foundations for their lifelong participation in our electoral processes,” adding that the reforms will help “restore trust” in the democratic system.
The document also argues that if 16-year-olds are allowed to work and pay taxes, then it is “right and fair that they should be able to vote.”
Under the new law, voter registration will open at age 14, enabling young people to be added to the electoral roll as soon as they become eligible. The bill introduces simplified identity verification processes for those without a National Insurance number and includes provisions to help children in care register to vote. However, the minimum age to stand for election will remain 18.
Critics have suggested that lowering the voting age could advantage Labour, noting that younger voters tend to favor left-wing parties. A recent poll indicates Labour leads with 28% support among 18 to 24-year-olds, followed closely by the Greens at 26%, and the Liberal Democrats at 20%.
Opposition politicians also questioned the logic behind the policy. Conservative Shadow Minister Paul Holmes asked, “Why does this government think a 16-year-old can vote but not be allowed to buy a lottery ticket, an alcoholic drink, marry, go to war, or even stand in the elections they’re voting in?”
